MDP Made Up!

Made Up: Design’s Fictions is an exhibition hosted by the MDP (January 29 – March 20, 2011). From the site:

MADE UP: Design’s Fictions presents the work of major and emerging international practices that forecast, hypothesize, muse, skylark, role-play, put-on-airs, freak-out or otherwise fake-it to produce work that is relevant to our increasingly confusing and accelerated world.

I was initially approached by Jayne Vidheecharoen to assist with the camera technology. Soon after various prototypes, it was clear that more was needed. We needed to pull symmetrically, from an array of 24 cameras, while switching LEDs on and off, generating a designed PDF of the imagery (which would be uploaded via FTP and printed to the back of the programs), and finally projecting it on to a screen.

A control panel was constructed utilizing HTML/CSS, JQuery, AJax and PHP. This control panel allowed the operator to start a timer sequence, that would trigger at a specified interval (10 minute default), the pre-programed sequence. I also constructed tools for managing the cameras, PDF’s and LED’s.

In order to communicate with the LED’s, we used xBees (wireless micro-controllers). We ran 4 LED’s per xBee for a total of 7 xBees and 28 LEDs. One additional xBee was dedicated as the base.
